\u201cDeuteronomy,\u201d meaning roughly \u201csecond law\u201d; however, this translation is inaccurate, as nothing new is added\u2014rather, large portions of the Law given at Sinai are simply repeated and explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this spirit, Hebrew tradition also calls it \u201cMisneh Tora,\u201d meaning \u201cthe repetition of the law.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Hebrew name is also taken from the opening words of the fifth scroll of Moses, \u201cElleh hadevarim,\u201d or in English: \u201cThese are the words.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deuteronomy contains Moses\u2019 farewell speeches to the people of Israel.<br>On the one hand, the people are prepared for the situation awaiting them in the Promised Land; on the other hand, Moses reminds Israel of the grace and faithfulness God has shown them in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He reinforces the existing commandments and their covenant with God in the nation\u2019s consciousness and reminds them of the consequences that both obedience\u2014in the form of blessings\u2014and disobedience\u2014in the form of curses\u2014entail.<br>It is Moses\u2019 legacy to once again exhort the people of Israel in powerful words to keep God\u2019s Word and to live in love and obedience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The end of the book contains prophetic statements about the people\u2019s failure, their dispersion among the nations, but also their complete restoration through God\u2019s grace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even though Moses\u2019 own speeches were written by him, the concluding section describing Moses\u2019 death must
