were likely divided so that the scrolls would not become too unwieldy.<br>Samuel certainly cannot be considered the sole author of both books. The books cover a period of about 150 years; the prophets Nathan and Gad may also have been involved in the composition of the writings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While we classify the Books of Samuel as historical books, in the Jewish Talmud they are counted among the early prophets (Nevi\u2019im).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In terms of content, the First Book of Samuel follows the Book of Judges; it describes the transition to a monarchy in Israel.<br>The people had grown weary of God\u2019s rule, which required personal responsibility and devotion, and, like their neighboring peoples, desired the apparent protection afforded by a king.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man Samuel combines several biblical offices in his person.<br>He was raised by the high priest Eli to be his successor; as the last great judge of Israel, he is a leader and at the same time a prophet who proclaimed God\u2019s will to the people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This passage gives us pause to reflect on how the story of two men who had been called to the highest office is described: Eli, the high priest, and Saul, the first king of Israel.<br>One lesson we can draw is that neither calling nor position offers protection if we do not also live our lives in accordance with God\u2019s will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The First Book of Samuel begins with Samuel\u2019s childhood and his calling as a prophet.<br>This is followed by the story of the loss and recovery of the Ark of the Covenant, as well as the people\u2019s demand for a king.<br>Finally, the book describes Saul\u2019s coronation as king, his downfall and death, and David\u2019s rise to
