class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><hr class=\"kt-divider\"\/><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The Book of Lamentations is also counted among the \u201cMajor\u201d Prophets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Hebrew name for the Book of Lamentations is \u201cEcha,\u201d which means a lamenting exclamation like the English \u201cOh dear\u201d or \u201cAlas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As textual findings in the Babylonian Empire attest, this form of literature appears to have been widespread throughout the \u201cAncient Near East.\u201d<br>They were composed and sung both as \u201cprayers of supplication\u201d in times of distress for individuals or entire peoples\u2014and, in other ways, as \u201clamentations\u201d for people, places, and nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There can be little doubt that the prophet Jeremiah is also the author of the Lamentations.<br>In Jesus\u2019 time, the Book of Jeremiah and the Lamentations were still combined in a single scroll in the Tanakh (the Jewish Old Testament) before the Lamentations were separated and assigned to the \u201cfestive scrolls.\u201d<br>In the Septuagint (the Greek translation of the sacred Jewish scriptures), the introduction states that Jeremiah sat down weeping and burst into this lament over Jerusalem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus, the Lamentations date to or around the year of the destruction of Solomon\u2019s Temple and the fall of Jerusalem at the hands of the Babylonian armies in 586 B.C.\u2014and this \u201cdestruction\u201d of Jerusalem is also the central theme of the Lamentations of the Prophet Jeremiah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A prophecy is only a prophecy if it also offers a glimpse into the future. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jeremiah saw Jerusalem torn down and burning right before his eyes\u2014a consequence of the people\u2019s unyielding idolatry and sin, despite the many warning calls for repentance from the prophets whom God had sent to the people in His love\u2014the fulfillment of the curses announced in the Torah for such behavior\u2014but Jeremiah\u2019s vision extends far beyond his own time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A good 650 years later, in the year 70 A.D., the second, long-and-often-announced destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple took place at the hands of the Romans under Titus, who became Caesar shortly thereafter\u2014because the Jewish people had rejected the Messiah, Jesus the Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After this, our time of grace and the subsequent three and a half years of the \u201chour of trial,\u201d at the beginning of the \u201cgreat tribulation,\u201d the world will witness a third desolation of Jerusalem, at the hands of the \u201cKing of the North\u201d\u2014the reasons being, once again, \u201cidolatry\u201d and the fact that this time the people of Israel will even accept the false Christ, the Antichrist, as the Messiah\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The central focus of the prophecies in Jeremiah\u2019s Lamentations, however, lies once again on Jesus Christ, the \u201cMan of Sorrows,\u201d who thereby \u201cpurchased\u201d salvation for everyone who accepts it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of all the many lessons we can draw from this book, these three insights speak to me in a very special way:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-theme-palette-11-color\">God must punish persistent sin if repentance does not follow\u2014He is just!<br>Only when we truly repent can restoration come to us!<br>God always wants to restore, heal, and provide for us\u2014He is merciful!\u2014Jesus Himself wept over Jerusalem and helped everyone who asked Him\u2014and that is exactly how He wants us to treat our fellow human beings, our verses\u2014corresponding to the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet.<br>Historically, the complete existence of these Lamentations poems was confirmed even before the time of Jesus, not only by the
