chapters<br>A truly \u201cstrange\u201d prophet of God!<\/h2>\n\n\n<style>.wp-block-kadence-spacer.kt-block-spacer-2502_6bc6b1-77 .kt-block-spacer{height:50px;}.wp-block-kadence-spacer.kt-block-spacer-2502_6bc6b1-77 class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><hr class=\"kt-divider\"\/><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The fifth of the \u201cminor\u201d prophets, Jonah\u2014which means \u201cdove\u201d\u2014lived during the time of the prophet Joel, who ministered in Judah, and the prophet Amos, who also lived in Judah but whose message was primarily directed at Jonah\u2019s homeland, the Northern Kingdom of Israel.<br>This was the period around the turn of the 9th and 8th centuries B.C.E.; Jeroboam II was king of Israel, and in Judah, Kings Amaziah and, after him, Uzziah\/Azariah reigned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, the prophet Jonah came from the north, from Gath-Hepher in Galilee, a town just an hour\u2019s walk northeast of Nazareth, where Jesus had grown up\u2014but to proclaim God\u2019s warnings in Jonah\u2019s homeland, a prophet from the south was chosen\u2014and Jonah was sent by God to Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrians, the ruling world power at that time \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So any \u201cprophet\u201d named Jonah, from any small vassal state, was to threaten the Assyrian world power, in the name of whatever god, with the complete destruction of their capital\u2014the largest city in the world at that time\u2014and all within just 40 days\u2014unless they repented and turned back!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, regarding Jonah, we are told of no other prophetic words, but only of this one and only mission from God\u2014go 1,000 kilometers east and proclaim to the Assyrians their doom if they do not repent \u201cimmediately.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what does this prophet of God named Jonah do? \u2013 Exactly the opposite!<br>He tries to flee 4,000 kilometers west, to Tarshish in what is now Spain, to the edge of the known world at that time, just to avoid having to carry out God\u2019s command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now you might think that\u2019s completely understandable; from a purely human perspective, the mission would likely mean a death sentence for Jonah.<br>If he ever made it to Nineveh at all\u2014and even managed to stand before the rulers there\u2014what would they do?<br>Laugh, have a grand time of it, and then cut Jonah\u2019s head off\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But that is not what Jonah fears at all\u2014on the contrary\u2014the prophet Jonah\u2019s fear is not for himself!<br>Jonah\u2019s fear is rather that the Assyrians might actually repent, do penance\u2014and that the Almighty might therefore spare them!<br>So the prophet doesn\u2019t want to grant them that after all!\u2014after they oppressed his country so\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following story, that Jonah is swallowed by a \u201cfish\u201d\u2026 I\u2019m sure every one of us has heard it before\u2014ridiculous and completely unbelievable\u2014right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my youth, I had heard of two incidents in the 20th century in which a man was swallowed\u2014once by a whale and the other time by a great white shark\u2014and both are said to have survived!<br>The man they managed to free from the shark\u2019s jaws in the English Channel was reportedly already slightly \u201cdigested\u201d\u2014well, as I said, I\u2019d heard about it, even though I wasn\u2019t there\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But just recently\u2014in February 2025\u2014a kayaker off the coast of Chile was swallowed by a humpback whale\u2014and then spat out again. Anyone can read about this incident online today, and even the German news program Tagesschau reported on it.<br>Consequently, it\u2019s entirely possible that a baleen whale\u2014which aren\u2019t \u201ccarnivores\u201d but feed on krill, tiny shrimp-like crustaceans that they \u201csuck in\u201d while swimming with their mouths open. These \u201cbaleen plates,\u201d after which they are named, serve as filters to keep out larger pieces.<br>A humpback whale\u2014which here apparently accidentally took a bite that was too big\u2014belongs to the \u201csmaller\u201d species of baleen whales; a blue whale, for instance, is about twice as large.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll have to read the rest of the brief story of Jonah\u2014a bitter, stubborn, and obstinate donkey like me\u2014whom God nevertheless called to be a prophet and whom He, in His love and grace, \u201ccompels\u201d to repent, but then also preserves and saves\u2014for yourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A God who, through His divine commission\u2014His message to the nations\u2014also teaches Jonah about himself, Jonah\u2019s own nature, corrects him, and grants him the grace of repentance.<br>There are many \u201clessons\u201d we can learn for ourselves from the book of the prophet!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>God\u2019s love and the offer of His grace are extended to all people\u2014even those who are still His \u201cenemies\u201d today\u2014He calls EVERYONE to repentance. He is patient, but also just; at some point, He must punish sin\u2014but He warns us and, out of love for us, tries to avoid judgment.<br>But what about our love for our fellow human beings???<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For God, there is no hopeless situation from which He cannot lead us out\u2014for the Creator of the universe, nothing is impossible!<br>Not even if we find ourselves in the belly of a whale in the middle of the ocean. He can help us through much or through little\u2014and now the big BUT:<br>It is up to us to take His path; His arms are always open to us\u2014Hallelujah!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Book of the Prophet Jonah is in itself a \u201cprophecy\u201d concerning Jesus Christ and at the same time a mirror of the religious \u201cselfishness\u201d that a part of Israel or the Jewish people, as God\u2019s \u201cchosen\u201d people, still harbors today toward the \u201cGentile nations.\u201d<br>Only in the \u201cvery last\u201d days, when they acknowledge the Messiah\u2014the Christ who came as the sacrificial lamb for all people from every nation\u2014when they \u201cgrant\u201d this \u201celection\u201d to people from all other nations as well\u2014will they experience God\u2019s salvation, HIS glory, and HIS presence in Israel!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jonas\u2019s \u201cswallowing\u201d also foreshadows Jesus\u2019 death.<br>The three days and nights in the belly of the fish correspond to the time Jesus spent in the realm of the dead.<br>The \u201cspitting out\u201d points to Jesus\u2019 resurrection from the dead\u2014death has lost its power!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The book of this strange prophet therefore requires no further oral prophetic announcement of the coming of our Lord Jesus. \ud83d\ude42<br>And even in the Old Covenant, which God had made only with the people of Israel, the same was true then as it is today:<br>God\u2019s love and His call to repentance apply not only to Israel\u2014God calls all of
