Introduction to the book of Joshua
The 6th Book of the Bible: A Book of Struggle, Triumph, and Victory
Joshua (Hebrew: Yehoshua) means “The Lord saves.”
In its Greek form, the name is very familiar to us—Jesus.
Joshua was first a disciple and servant, then the successor to Moses. It was his task to conquer the Promised Land and thus establish a homeland for the people of Israel.
Historically, the Book of Joshua follows seamlessly from the fifth book of Moses; here, the promise to the people is fulfilled.
Moses had led Israel to the border of Canaan; under Joshua, the tribes now crossed the Jordan and began fighting against the native peoples. Throughout this, it remained crucial for the people to strictly adhere to God’s commandments. Victory or defeat depended on this.
In the Book of Joshua, we read of miracles that God performs for His children, but also of the consequences that our disobedience brings.
After the successful conquest of the territory that God had already promised to Abraham, the exact boundaries of the 12 tribes—and thus of the land of Israel—are laid out for us.
The entire book serves as a model for the spiritual battle we face today (see Paul’s letter to the Ephesians).
The promises in Christ have already been fulfilled; it is our task to “claim” these blessings so that we may enjoy them. The enemy will not give us anything voluntarily, just as the enemies of Israel did not.
In our Christian tradition, the Book of Joshua is classified among the historical books; in the Hebrew Tanakh, it is the first book of the Prophets and thus belongs to the second part of the biblical canon.
According to tradition, Joshua himself is the author of this book, meaning it was written in the second half of the 16th century B.C.
It concludes with Joshua’s farewell speeches and reports that Israel remained faithful to its God as long as the elders who had witnessed God’s deeds during the conquest of the land were still alive.
