Introduction to the second letter to Timothy

The 55th book of the Bible, the 16th in the New Testament

The Second Letter to Timothy, like the First Letter to Timothy and the Letter to Titus, is one of the Pastoral Epistles, in which Paul offers much instruction to church leaders.

Nevertheless, it differs from the other two in its very personal and intimate tone.
While Timothy is still addressed as a “true child / true son in the faith” in the first letter, in this second—and likely his very last—letter, Paul uses the term “beloved child.”

Paul senses that he does not have much time left in this world and asks Timothy, who is still in the church in Ephesus, to come to him in his imprisonment in Rome.

The Second Epistle to Timothy is sometimes also referred to as the Apostle’s testament.
With its prophetic view of the temptations facing the church and the apostasy from the Christian faith in the end times, this letter serves as a solemn testament from Paul to all future generations of Christians, urging them to remain steadfast in the good fight of the faith.

In terms of content, this letter can also be divided into two parts.
In the first part, Paul exhorts Timothy to stand firm in the Good News of Jesus Christ and to follow his example even in the face of impending suffering.
He also encourages him, assuring him that God, in His grace, will grant Timothy the strength needed to do so.

The second part consists of practical instructions on how to deal with false teachers. Here, a gentle but firm rebuke is required; discussions and disputes should be avoided.
The emergence of false teachings is a sign of the last days before Christ’s return. All the more reason, then, to proclaim the Gospel for the salvation of lost humanity.

The Second Epistle to Timothy was written between the years 65 and 67 A.D. while Paul was imprisoned in Rome.
