Introduction to the letter to Titus

The 56th book of the Bible, the 17th in the New Testament

Along with 1 and 2 Timothy, the Epistle to Titus is one of the so-called Pastoral Epistles.
The Epistle to Titus is addressed to a close associate of Paul, who had already accompanied him to the Council of Jerusalem in the year 48 AD.

Titus is considered the first bishop of Crete. There was a strong connection to their own 2,000-year-old Minoan culture, which made the transmission of the Christian faith difficult.

In the first part of the letter, the apostle reminds Titus why he should remain on the Mediterranean island of Crete and what his responsibilities are.

His task was, on the one hand, to establish a Christian church structure and house churches, to appoint “elders” (a leadership within the church), and to ensure proper administration.

Second, Titus was charged with defending the young church against emerging heresies; specifically, a doctrine speculating about the origin of the world is addressed here.
To protect the church, if other means fail, expulsion from the community may also be threatened.

The second part of the letter contains detailed instructions regarding church life.
In it, Paul identifies the various groups within the congregation: elders and younger members, women, men, and slaves.

All who are part of the body of Christ are to lead exemplary lives so as not to bring the Christian message into disrepute among unbelievers through moral misconduct.
God’s desire is that all people accept salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.

In terms of content, there is a similarity to the First Epistle to Timothy, although Titus places greater emphasis on church building.

Paul likely wrote the letter to Titus between the two letters to Timothy, around the year 65 A.D.
